Corrales Arts Center – Opening Reception – the works of Michael Baron, Lynda Burch and Steve Wentworth

January 6, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

ART OF DOWEL® originator and artisan, Michael Baron, from his first wood creation at age 6 in Brooklyn, to the present day in New Mexico, sees wood as a medium for artistic expression and versatile function. Initially attending Syracuse University’s School of Architecture, he chose to later focus on “inner design,” receiving his PhD from the University of New Mexico in 1978 (the year he became the first Lobo mascot in The Pit for the UNM men’s basketball team), becoming a licensed psychologist in 1979, and pursuing private practice, Therapy Services, since 1980. Having also served as psychologist to New Mexico’s schools, and traveled over half a million miles doing so, he opted in 2010 to forgo being “Road Warrior” and practices solely out of his home office in Corrales. This has also allowed Michael to pursue his 50-year fascination with curvilinear design, with dowels his medium of choice.

I like using color in a big vibrant way creating moods to set the tone of the work. Free, bold and strong are words often used to describe my art. I am constantly turned on by new challenges and love experimental methods using related water mediums such as acrylics, collage, inks and layering techniques.  I have studied intensively, both at home and abroad, with many of today’s leading watercolorists. I am a Signature Member of the New Mexico Watercolor Society, the International Society of Experimental Artists, International Society of Acrylic Painters, a juried member of the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media and also a member of National Collage Society. I have been juried into many shows throughout the Southwest in the last few years.”

” I am a native New Mexican and resident of the Albuquerque.  I concentrate on wildlife and environmental work documenting what I see in an area. Most of my photography is done within a short radius of Albuquerque. I try to capture the detail and beauty of the living environment as I experience it. I reproduce the image in a natural manner while trying to bring out the detail and color that is already there. All animals were photographed in natural light and were free and wild.  I am always amazed at what we can see if we only take the time to be still and look around. I share my work with different government groups, educational institutions and environmental groups. I do some public events like the Gathering of Nations and some journalistic work for UNM.  Some of my work can be seen on the Sierra Club’s “Save the Bosque – (Visions)” website at:  www.savethebosque.org

Please join us for an opening reception Sunday, January 6th from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm.  The artists will be providing brief talks about their work, and providing demonstrations.  Smaller pieces of art will be for sale during the reception. Light refreshments will be served.
