The vision of the Corrales Arts & Cultural District is to provide a vibrant arts and agricultural setting for residents and visitors that is anchored in heritage, will preserve history, and can foster economic vitality in the community. District strengths supporting this vision include an agricultural landscape and lifestyle, historical structures, arts and cultural organizations, and strong community pride.

This draft is a working roadmap that contains findings from our community that CMS can use in future work to help connect challenges to goals and opportunities to support organizations, residents and businesses. A fact sheet summary is provided below to provide further clarity about the intentions and purpose of the plan.

Important: It is not the intention of this document to support projects that circumvent the community process. The implementation strategy acknowledges that an arts and cultural district is an active effort of the local community through a partnership with the local arts council and through support and buy-in of the local community. Mutual trust, transparency, active inclusion, and community participation are necessary to further the goals and objectives of the plan.

ACD CULTURAL PLAN SCHEDULE

The Cultural Plan is the final step in the designation process. We have been working with Strata Design and NM MainStreet on this plan since 2018, gathering input from local organizations, stakeholders and residents. Over the past 13 months, we’ve collected information during direct meetings with over 20 organizations, set up at various information booths at local events, invited groups and residents to public forums and sent out email communications. This process includes an extensive checklist of benchmarks that have been achieved by a large group of volunteers who have graciously given their time and expertise in assisting the ACD Steering Committee. As we approach these final steps, we would like to acknowledge and thank each and every individual and organization who has assisted in this process. It takes a village working together!

August 13th

The council voted to postpone the CEDP plan approval for consideration to October 22nd and requested that it align with the Corrales Comprehensive Plan.

October 22

The council will reconsider the adoption of the CEDP plan. To ensure the ACD aligns with the Comprehensive plan, CMS has reviewed its draft, spoken with the committee, met with residents and community groups, and added language to the CEDP plan to acknowledge that there will be no conflict between the two.

“The Village Comprehensive Plan serves as a long-term framework for the community’s physical, social, and economic development. The Village relies on this plan to achieve its long-term vision, manage land use, and guide future investments. Supporting this effort, the Arts & Cultural Economic Development Plan operates at a lower level and aims to align with the core values of the Corrales Comprehensive Plan, focusing specifically on the community’s unique arts, culture, history, and heritage. Consequently, the implementation strategies of the ACEDP must not conflict with the Village Comprehensive Plan.”

Designation Process

Corrales MainStreet has been working hard since 2013 toward becoming a State Authorized Arts and Cultural District. This is an opportunity for all our arts and cultural organizations and businesses to collaborate to support an economically vibrant cultural district. We were approved in 2018, and are now in the final phase of this process. We received funds from New Mexico Main Street to complete the Arts and Cultural Economic Development Plan, which will help guide our work and provide access to future funding sources to complete projects in the district.

The next steps are to receive public input, then present our information to New Mexico Main Street. Once the board reviews the plan, it will be presented to the Village Council for approval and then the New Mexico Arts Commission for review. Our goal is to complete this process by August of 2024! Update: we are extending our completion date to allow for more community questions and input. Please join us for the public forum on July 31st. Details above.

The Cultural Compound

Rooted in a cultural history that dates back centuries, the Cultural Compound embraces its heritage. Historic adobe structures, traditional celebrations, and cultural events pay homage to the Native American and Hispanic influences that have shaped the community. The past is not a distant memory here but a living, breathing part of daily life.
